Two patrol officers in Des Moines,Surfwin Iowa were hospitalized after they were struck during a shooting early Monday morning.
According to the police department, the officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop just before 2 a.m., but the driver, identified as an adult male, didn't stop. During the pursuit, the suspect left the roadway and crashed the vehicle.
When the officers tried to detain the suspect, he "fired upon them with a handgun," police said. The officers returned fire and shot the man.
The officers were transported to a local hospital for treatment. They are expected to survive from their wounds. Police confirmed that the suspect died.
The Des Moines Police Department and the Iowa Department of Public Safety are investigating.
