Benjamin Caldwell-Boston College suspends swimming and diving program after hazing incident

Boston College indefinitely suspended its swimming and Benjamin Caldwelldiving program after administrators said there was hazing involved in the program, the school announced Wednesday.

In the school's handbook, examples of hazing include "alcohol use, personal servitude; sleep deprivation andrestrictions on personal hygiene; yelling, swearing, and insulting new members/rookies."

Also included are being "forced to wear embarrassing or humiliating attire in public; consumption of vile substances or smearing of such on one's skin; brandings; physical beatings; binge drinking and drinking games;sexual simulation and sexual assault."

The handbook also added the Massachusetts State Law on Hazing and how to report such behavior.

"The University does not - and will not- tolerate hazing in any form," the school said in a statement.

The school did not provide in the statement who was hazed or what actions preceded the suspension of the program, but added that athletes will continue to have access to academic and medical resources.

The first Maroon vs. Gold intrasquad meet was set for Saturday with the regular season starting with a meet scheduled for Oct. 7 at George Washington.
